Located on the Wild West Coast, Glacier Country remains almost untouched and has around 140 glaciers but only Franz Josef and Fox Glacier come all the way down to the lower rainforest. The small township of Fox Glacier is tucked into the foothills of the Southern Alps and is just 5km from the terminal face making is one of the most accessible glaciers in the world. It is a major tourist attraction and in the peak summer season around 1000 people will visit the glacier each day.
