You will be spoilt for choice on this amazing full North Island loop, with so much to see and do. Go kayaking or hiking to the iconic Cathedral Cove and dig your own hot pool in the sand under the stars at Hot Water Beach.

We take you to Wai-O-Tapu thermal park (featuring a number of exhilarating mud pools, geysers and sulphur pools) included free of charge and if you’re interested in our culture, Central North Island is a focal point, a visit to Tamaki village is a must! You’ll also have the chance to jump outside your comfort zone with adventurous activities such as zorbing, zip lining, skydiving and bungy jumping.. You can even bungy into a river. New Zealand is the best place to do it so go for it!

*This tour is subject to minimum numbers of 10 students. If on the small chance we are required to cancel we will endeavor to re-book you onto a similar tour at no extra charge.

  1. Departing Nelson at 9:30am we make our way towards Picton. There’s time for a quick lunch stop then it’s onto the ferry for our afternoon scenic ferry sailing through the picturesque Marlborough sounds to Wellington. Camping isn’t feasible in the heart of the nation’s capital so we will be staying at a great hostel centrally located in the city.

    • Walks and Hikes: we'll make a stop at pelorus bridge that has short walking tracks and is a Hobbit film location
    • Drive Distance: 2 Hours and 3 Hours on the Ferry
  2. Leaving the city at 10am, we travel up the scenic Kapiti Coast towards the Taranaki region – home to wonderful beaches, crashing waves and the spectacular Mount Taranaki. Our campsite is beside the Taranaki coastline offering a short scenic walk or cycle to camp at the end of the day. Relax to the sound of crashing waves and be ready to watch the sunset over the ocean, a great way to finish the day!

    • Bike Rides: Cycle along the New Plymouth Coastal walk/cycle way
    • Walks and Hikes: Walk along the coastal walkway to Te Rewa Rewa bridge!
    • Drive Distance: 6 Hours
  3. This morning we journey towards the limestone wonderland of Waitomo Caves, home to an endemic species of glow-worms that inhabit the vast cave systems. Black water rafting is a unique way to experience the caves as you float through the underground maze with the experienced guides and radiant light of the glow-worms to lead the way. We take time to enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing onto “the city of sails”, Auckland where we arrive by 6pm. Tonight we stay in a hostel located in the heart of the city.

    • Walks and Hikes: Beautiful bush walk if not doing cave rafting
    • Drive Distance: 5 Hours
  4. Leaving Auckland at 10am we head to the "winterless north" and the pristine beaches of the Bay of Islands. We stop at the incredible Uretiti beach for a swim and a walk along the sand. Grab a rugby ball and frisbee off the bus and brush up on your passing skills at this picturesque beach spot. On arrival into Paihia, the gateway town to the Bay of Islands, choose from the Mangrove walk or a beautiful cycle to the thundering Haruru waterfall.

    • Bike Rides: Cycle past Waitangi to Haruru Falls
    • Walks and Hikes: Walk to the thundering Haruru Falls through mangrove trees
    • Drive Distance: 4 Hours
  5. Experience a full day exploring the Bay of Islands and its turquoise waters. This subtropical region is the perfect playground for water lovers and a great place to soak up the sunshine. With a staggering 144 islands, the Bay of Islands offers swimming, sailing, parasailing, dolphin swimming, kayaking plus much more along with some excellent walks in the native forests. This region is also home to some of the oldest European settlements in New Zealand.

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
    • Bike Rides: If not doing an activity hop on a bike to explore Paihia
    • Walks and Hikes: If not doing an activity walk into Paihia or take a trip over to the historic town of Russell
    • Drive Distance: No driving today
  6. There is a day full of adventure ahead as we travel to the rugged and soulful West Coast. Our first stop comes with a chance to try your skillssand-boarding down the sandy steeping dunes of Oponoi. Then it’s back on board as we head south towards the Waipoua Forest, travelling through the largest remaining tract of native kauri forests in northland. Our beachside camp tonight is in Orewa, home to one of the Auckland regions longest and safest beaches. A great place for a swim or relax at the local hot pools.

    • Bike Rides: Short ride around the Orewa estuary to finish the day
    • Walks and Hikes: Short walks to see epic Kauri trees and strolling along the beach at camp
    • Drive Distance: 4 hours
  7. Enjoy a beautiful sunrise over the sea which is well worth the early start to check it out. We then travel through Auckland city and onwards to the Coromandel, renowned for its natural beauty, misty rainforests and pristine white, sandy beaches. Marvel at the views on a beautiful coastal walk or take in the coastline from the water by kayak. Visit the unique and famous Hot Water Beach to dig, then relax, in your own thermal pool! Soak up the breath-taking scenery and cameras ready for spectacular sunsets at our beachside camp.

    • Walks and Hikes: Awesome walk to Cathedral Cove if not kayaking
    • Drive Distance: 3 hours
  8. The morning is filled with activity as we make our way south into the thermal wonderland of Rotorua. On the way, those visiting Hobbiton leave us in Matamata as we continue to the cultural and geological heart of the North Island and the perfect place to experience and learn about Maori culture and the dramatic natural thermals. There is plenty of action to choose from such as Zip Lining, OGO and the Luge or go biking in the Whakarewarewa forest. We recommend finishing your day with a Maori cultural experience at the Tamaki Maori Village, there really is something for everyone!

    • Walks and Hikes: Walking to the geothermal parks in downtown Rotorua
    • Drive Distance: 4 hours
  9. This morning we check out the geysers and mud pools at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. First, we visit the Lady Knox Geyser before exploring one of New Zealand’s most extensive geothermal networks, a unique landscape with colourful sulphur lakes and diverse volcanic vistas. We then take time to enjoy the impressive Huka Falls before arriving into Taupo, considered the North Island's adrenalin capital. Test your fear of heights on the giant swing, bungy or go skydiving, the scenery is well worth it! We finish the day with a beautiful drive around the edge of Lake Taupo continuing south to the National Park Village in the North Island’s Central Plateau.

    • Bike Rides: Bike into Taupo if not on an activity
    • Walks and Hikes: Exploring Wai-o-tapu geothermal park before an awesome walk along the Waikato river if not doing activities
    • Drive Distance: 3 Hours
  10. Wake up and explore the beautiful Mt Ruapehu, New Zealand’s premier outdoor destination with plenty of mountain biking and walk options to choose from. Go white water rafting, journey to the summit of Mt Ruapehu and visit NZ’s highest café or take in a guided walk of the crater lake. Mid- afternoon we make our way south towards the Kapiti coast and our scenic coastal camp at Paekakariki.

    • Walks and Hikes: Hiking options in the Ruapehu area
    • Drive Distance: 5 Hours
  11. Travelling the short distance to Wellington we arrive there by 10am where it’s time to say farewell to those leaving us here. Spend a couple of hours exploring the capital city before it’s time to say goodbye to the North Island as the South Island welcomes us with picturesque scenery of the Marlborough sounds as we cross the Cook Strait by ferry before arriving into Nelson by 7:30pm
